What’s Your Intangible Financial Legacy?

Your intangible financial legacy is the impact you leave on others through your financial mindset, values, and actions. It’s not just about the money you leave behind, but the lessons and values you pass on.

When we think about legacy, we often focus on tangible assets-money, real estate, jewelry, or art. But your intangible legacy-your mindset, values, and daily actions is just as impactful and often more stable. Your legacy doesn’t begin when you leave this earth; it’s being written every single day, through the choices you make and the values you uphold.

Think about a common phrase like, “I can’t afford this.” While it may seem harmless, it reinforces a scarcity mindset. Instead, reframe it to: “I choose not to spend on this because I’m prioritizing something more important.” This simple shift not only empowers you but also teaches others that financial decisions are choices, not limitations.

Lessons from My Parents

I was fortunate to grow up with parents who modeled different yet equally valuable lessons about money and mindset. My mom always focused on ensuring we had shelter. Her discipline and commitment allowed her to pay off our home in just seven years, showing me how prioritizing fixed expenses over desires can lead to stability and peace of mind. She taught me that no matter the circumstance, it’s important to focus on what truly matters. Her words often echo in my mind: “Even the sparrows have their home.”

On the other hand, my dad embodied generosity. He believed in sharing his resources to invest in relationships and create lasting memories. Whether it was paying for meals with family or gym memberships for my friends, his actions taught me the power of giving when you have the means. His generosity wasn’t about extravagance, it was about connection. His example inspires me to this day, showing me the profound impact of generosity on shaping a legacy.

These lessons from my parents planted the seeds for my financial mindset and inspired me to approach money with both discipline and heart.

Building Your Own Intangible Legacy

Your intangible legacy is shaped by your actions and the lessons you teach others through example. Here are a few ways to start building yours today:

  • Model an Abundance Mindset: Replace limiting beliefs with empowering thoughts. Instead of saying, “I’ll never get ahead,” try, “I’m working toward my goals, one step at a time.” Consider setting specific financial goals and celebrating small victories along the way. Small mindset shifts like these can have a big impact on how others perceive and approach financial challenges.
  • Share Your Knowledge: Have conversations about money, leadership, and values with those in your circle. Whether it’s mentoring a colleague or teaching your children about budgeting, these interactions help others build their own financial confidence.
  • Invest in Relationships: As my dad taught me, generosity isn’t just about giving financially-it’s about showing up for the people who matter to you. Simple acts of kindness can leave a lasting impression.
  • Align Your Time, Talent, and Treasures: Think about how you’re using your resources to reflect your values. Whether you’re volunteering, mentoring, or contributing to causes you care about, these actions build a legacy of purpose and impact. It’s not just about what you do, but how you do it, and the values you uphold in the process.

How I’m Shaping My Legacy

These lessons shaped my own financial mindset and inspired how I approach giving back today. Through mentoring, workshops, and projects like Women’s Million Dollar Conversations [link], I strive to empower others to build confidence, know their worth, and lead with courage.

I’m proud to carry forward the values my parents instilled in me while adding my own chapter to the story. By sharing my experiences and encouraging others to rethink their relationship with money, I hope to create a ripple effect that inspires future generations to believe in their own potential.

What Legacy Will You Leave?

Take a moment to reflect: What intangible financial legacy are you building?

  • Are you modeling an abundance mindset for those around you?
  • Are you sharing your values through how you spend your time, talent, and treasures?
  • Are you having meaningful conversations about money and leadership with the next generation?

It’s never too late to start, every action you take today can leave a lasting impression on the world.

Let’s commit to being as thoughtful about our intangible legacies as we are about our tangible ones. By embodying the legacy we want to leave behind, starting today, we can leave this world a better place.
