“There are so many reasons to make a career transition. Sometimes it’s dissatisfaction. Sometimes it’s that inner compass saying: I can do more, I can be more, and I can have greater impact.”

[00:00:22]
Alice Tang: Good morning, everyone. I’m Alice Tang, your host for Women’s Million Dollar Conversations in Northwest America. I’m here today with a new good friend, Gina Riley. Gina, would you tell us a little bit about you?

[00:00:22]
Alice Tang: Tell us a little bit about you.

[00:00:30]
Gina Riley: My name is Gina Riley. I’m a career coach working specifically with leaders and executives who are navigating career transitions—whether they’ve been laid off or they’re proactively looking to get promoted, move into a new role, or maximize their financial upside. I do this through a model I call Career Velocity, a nine-step program that walks clients through the process of achieving their next big career goal. I’m also affiliated with Talents Group Executive Search and Consulting, where I’ve conducted executive searches and lead interview skills training in corporate environments.

Alice Tang: What is your value of money?

[00:02:10]
Alice Tang: For me, money is about choices. It’s independence and freedom. When you don’t have enough financial resources, your choices are limited. When you do, you’re not stuck—you can stand up for yourself, raise your hand, and walk away if needed.

[00:03:10]
Alice Tang: Let’s focus on your journey accumulating your first million—not your fifth million. How long did it take, and what was the biggest hurdle or bias you faced?

Alice Tang: Let’s focus on your journey accumulating your first million—not your fifth million. How long did it take, and what was the biggest hurdle or bias you faced?

[00:03:20]
Gina Riley: For me, the million is really about partnership. I’ve had an incredible partnership of over 30 years with my husband, Sean Riley. We call it Team Riley. Even when I took a 15-year break from the workforce as a stay-at-home parent, my husband consistently reminded me of my value in the partnership. While his career flourished in high tech, we made intentional decisions together—successive saving, successive investing, and working with trusted financial advisors rather than doing it alone.

Play Bias

[00:07:05]
Alice Tang: What is the biggest hurdle to getting to that million?

[00:07:10]
Gina Riley: Resistance and delayed gratification. You can’t do everything at once. You have to choose patience, long-term visibility, and self-control. Just because you want something doesn’t mean you need it. Every choice has a cost—short-term gain versus long-term security. As adults, we have to own those trade-offs.

Play Biggest hurdle

[00:09:05]
Alice Tang: Was there ever a time when it felt too hard? What kept you going?

[00:09:10]
Gina Riley: There were moments when we chose experience over financial security—like big family trips that mattered deeply. You don’t get those moments back. When you zoom out, those experiences were worth it. It comes back to priorities—not balance, but priorities. Because we made smart financial decisions earlier, we had choices later.

Play What kept you going

[00:12:10]
Alice Tang: When you’re making a big financial decision and the stakes are high, what process do you and your husband use?

[00:12:15]
Gina Riley: We start with what we want and then back into what’s reasonable. Whether it’s a home or a car, we align desire with affordability so we’re not living uncomfortably or putting ourselves at risk. Instead of buying brand-new, we might buy a few-year-old car in great condition—something we can pay cash for or finance responsibly without stress.

[00:14:20]
Alice Tang: What is your money legacy?

[00:14:25]
Gina Riley: I come from a very planful, thrifty family. My legacy is teaching my children to be thoughtful stewards of money—how to evaluate purchases, look at value, and think long-term. They understand price per ounce at the grocery store. They thrift shop. It’s about modeling smart decision-making and stewardship, not deprivation.

Play Making big decisions

[00:15:20]
Alice Tang: What are you grateful for today?

[00:15:25]
Gina Riley: I’m grateful to live in a place I love—Central Oregon—where our home is welcoming and filled with people we care about. I’m especially grateful that my adult children still want to come home and spend time with us.

[00:16:05]
Alice Tang: We’re so grateful for you and for the wisdom you’ve shared with our audience. Thank you so much for joining Women’s Million Dollar Conversations.

[00:16:15]
Gina Riley: Thank you.
